Ask professionals your health questions and learn about helping your daughter or son recover from an eating disorder.

Most treatment for eating disorders is not covered by insurance. Bulimia is still seen as a choice made by young, wealthy girls who are vain. Yet, Anorexia has one of the highest mortality rates of any mental illness. So why is there no funding for treatment?

Shelley’s Angels Society founder, Shelley Jensen, knows all too well the hopelessness individuals feel. She hears from them in her private counselling practice and she reads their desperate letters to her as they apply for funding from her non-profit organization.

It is with this heartbreak that she and her “angels” are producing the second annual “Until Your Heart’s Content” Conference. Supporters, those who have been affected by eating disorders, professionals and families will converge for one day to raise funds for those who can’t afford treatment.

Shelley’s Angels Society

Started in 2007, this ambitious non-profit organization was created from the need to help those with an eating disorder get the therapy they needed. Shelley had already raised approximately $15,000 as an individual over the years but wanted to do it on a larger scale.

Thus, Shelley’s Angels Society was born. The board is made up of women who have recovered from their own eating disorders and they believe it’s time to make a lasting difference in the lives of those who are ready to recover. Now.

Recovery Conference for Families

This year’s conference takes place on October 5, 2008 at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam, Canada. The theatre will be filled with professional speakers, those seeking information and help, and entertainment by those who have recovered from their own eating disorders.

Keynote speaker Dr. Anita Johnston (who is also holding a workshop the day before the conference) will return this year, as will Dr. Ellen Domm and author Ted Kuntz. They will be joined by movement therapist Tannis Hugill, Caulfield School of Dance, The Carolyn Stewart Band and the remarkable singing talent of Ev.

Says Shelley Jensen: “Families are urged to attend to find a community of hope and support among others facing similar experiences… Professionals in the field are encouraged to attend to network and learn from the foremost experts in the field… Educators and the general public are invited to exchange ideas and find new tools to raise awareness of disordered eating.”

Help for those Dealing with an Eating Disorder

The message is clear: eating disorder treatment is not being funded and women and men are not getting the help they need to take their lives back. This event will bridge that gap and give hope to the millions of people still in search of help.

“After realizing the impact of last year’s event, it became more than apparent that families are searching for answers and above all, hope,” adds Shelley. “For me, I love the thought of bringing together some of the most remarkable people I have met in the field and letting the community know that those resources are available to them.”

Monetary help is definitely needed in the interim until the Government realizes there is a very great need for assistance for those that cannot help themselves. Conferences like this get the word out that help is available. No one is alone.
